SLOUGH CREEK PACK TRIP

Legendary Waters & Unforgettable Catches on a Multi-Day Fly Fishing Adventure in YNP

For many anglers, fishing Slough Creek is the adventure of a lifetime—and Skyline Guest Ranch is thrilled to offer this iconic trip for fly fishing enthusiasts. Nestled in the remote northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park, Slough Creek is one of the most celebrated fisheries in the lower 48 states, known for its abundant native cutthroat trout. These beauties typically measure 16 to 18 inches, with the thrilling possibility of landing a 20-inch trophy. Our journey begins with an eight-mile horseback ride from the Slough Creek Trailhead, giving you ample time to fish both upon arrival and before heading home. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by Yellowstone’s breathtaking scenery—a perfect backdrop as you prepare to test your skills against some of the region’s most sought-after fish.

Upon arrival at our comfortable base camp, set in the upper reaches of Slough Creek, you’ll have access to miles of pristine waters. Big fish, slow waters, and sweeping mountain vistas make this area a dream come true for fly fishermen. By mid-summer, the meadows come alive with grasshoppers, drawing hungry cutthroat trout to the surface for some of the best sight fishing you’ll ever experience. Spend your days casting large dry flies and your evenings enjoying hearty, home-cooked meals by the campfire. If you’re still eager after dinner, the evening hatches offer prime fishing conditions right up until dark!

Wildlife sightings are common in these lush meadows—bison, wolves, and even grizzly bears are often spotted, adding to the wild charm of this unforgettable trip.

Spend your days perfecting your cast in the crystal-clear waters of Slough Creek, where sight fishing is the name of the game. The slow, meandering currents require patience and precision, rewarding anglers who take their time and approach with care. Early mornings are ideal for hiking to your favorite spot and getting set up before the fish become active. July brings vibrant mayfly hatches and eager trout rising to hoppers, while August and September call for smaller terrestrials like ants and beetles as the fish become more discerning. After a full day on the water, return to camp for another gourmet meal, stories by the fire, and a peaceful night under the stars.

As the sun rises on your final day, savor a hearty breakfast and take in the beauty of the valley one last time. Whether you’re heading out for a quick morning fish or packing up camp for the journey home, you’ll leave with memories of towering peaks, clear mountain streams, and the thrill of landing wild cutthroat trout in one of Yellowstone’s most legendary fishing spots.
